It’s Frosting In My Sweet World!

“And they’re saying 10-15 more inches before it’s over!”

“Who said that?”

Twitter!” (imagine embarrassed face with voice inflection on that second syllable)

This was part of a conversation I had this morning regarding the snow storm which so lovingly hit our state in the past 24 hours. Heck, the past 12 hours. Wow. These cars I see with their 5 inches of white fluff on top look like huge, mobile cupcakes with a perfect layer of icing atop. Yum. Imagine a cupcake that big. I’m a girl who loves her sweets and think I could probably take it down (if I had no other food) within a few days. Might take longer to get rid of the resulting tummyache though! Speaking of cupcakes, I know Little Rock has some great locally owned bakeries. The Sync staff regularly indulges in the tiny cups of heaven from Cupcakes on Kavanaugh. Whether it be a staff member’s birthday or just an afternoon pick-me-up. Their Razorback Red Velvet is worthy of the red carpet and their Peanut Butter Cup with a Reese’s Cup garnish is enough to make even this girl who doesn’t eat peanut butter want to devour one. I have a friend who started an at-home cupcake biz last summer. She has no store (yet) and I don’t know how often she fills orders. But something that makes her different from the others? Her cupcakes are vegan. Yes, vegan. Should you be interested in some help on your next vegan-catered event or reception or birthday gift, I’d be glad to give you her information.

*Notice how I’ve nicely changed the subject from the terrible weather? :)   I hate this kind of weather and know if I talk about it, nothing good will come from my mouth, so I pretend I’m oblivious.

So, with dangerous road conditions, not much gas in my cupcake and a sweet tooth aching for some sweet comfort food, it looks like tonight’s forecast calls for another layer of the white stuff and more icing…and I’m not even talking about what’s going on outside.

But What’s Her Name?

She’s here!

Valerie and I had a smooth, speedy trip to Texarkana (see previous post) With a few stops along the way…oil change, makeup, gas, state trooper…the usual.

I’ve got to brag. We get to the hospital at 3:15 and find our parents in the waiting room. Mama shows us to Carmen’s room. Going to pop in to say “hi and good luck.” I walk up and hear…the baby crying! “She’s here! She’s here! Go call them! (meaning the family, since Mama had phone in hand) I hear her crying!”

*Please excuse the eyeliner samples on my wrist :)

Unfortunately the volume of my voice was enough to alert the nurse who promptly poked her head out the door to let us know we “need to leave. It will be a few minutes”. But hey, those bragging rights can’t be taken away from me!

So we’re in the waiting room a few minutes later and more family shows up and Trey comes in to announce. Baby is 7 lb. 12 oz. and  22″ long with very long feet. What’s her name? No answer. Everyone is excited and we begin to

Tweet, text, Facebook this news!

Tweet, text, Facebook, etc. What’s her name? No answer.

Quick and easy (easy for us to say–WE aren’t the ones having the baby!) It’s a big fun party with kids running around with balloons and chocolate covered pretzels. Well, not for everyone. Carmen was snacking on a club sandwich when we go in and see her. I think the nurses were mixed up  because 10 minutes after she ate her sandwich they brought another entree! Please find the one carrot stick a significant part of a healthy meal :)

"You had a baby! Now have some gravy!"

The cousins are sooo eager to see her.

Lined up to meet the little one.

‘Twas a wonderful reunion with the family, a fun road trip on a sunny day with one of my best friends who shares nieces with me. I gave Trey some Samoas (his favorite Girl Scout Cookie) Maybe he’ll share with Carmen after she finishes her carrot stick and mystery meat. But he’d better save some for these little girls because they’re going to need something to make it through the next few days. They just don’t know it yet.

Chili, Oranges and More Blonde

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

I’ve had chili on my mind the past two weeks.  So I took it to the streets. For last week’s issue of Sync I interviewed passers-by, asking  “How do you like your chili?” Then it rubbed off. After I mentioned it, they smiled and a few said “Now I’m in the mood for chili!”

Me? Why, thanks for asking. I like mine made with beans. I like spicy. I prefer to put ketchup in mine and would even sprinkle chopped onions on top if available. And crackers…crumbled on top like when I was a kid. One woman told me she puts sugar in hers. That’s a new one to me. Want more? You can even join the society! What about you? Maybe I just need to make a big pot and we can chili-chat over a steaming bowl of it.

Mmmmm, oranges. A fruit I have not always adored, now I keep a bag of them in my fridge 80% of the time. The other day at the office, Shea asked me why are there seeds in some slices when you slice a Navel Orange and other times there are none. I have no idea. I’m no orange farmer, nutritionist nor foodie. He peels his orange as a whole. I cut mine in slices then peel each individually (as you would find on a cruise ship buffet or cocktail reception table) This led me to a few sites you may enjoy…if you love oranges and really wanted to know more about varieties and, hey wait, Shea…this article says Navels are seedless.

This one’s for the girls: I took a big step. I let a different stylist color my hair this week. First time for her to do it and I’m so pleased. A longer drive than my norm for a trip to the salon, but it paid off in the attention she gave me, non-rushed chat, and getting to see a friend I rarely see. But it also felt good just to shake things up a bit. Bonus: I perused a Cosmo magazine, met her new boyfriend and educated her about Twitter. And was out of there in less than 2 hours. And since I just confessed to fresh blonde, I have an excuse for the next few weeks. That being said…woooohooo! Happy Nat’l Blonde Brownie Day!

So, what’s on your mind? I asked the Governor that question this week at an event at his mansion. He mentioned the budget and that he’s running for re-election. I chuckled. PSA: just because you’re in someone’s house, doesn’t mean they want to share secrets with you. So next time you’re at my mansion and we’re chatting and you ask me a question, don’t be surprised if I just tell you to read my blog then offer you another bowl of chili.

First Day of Winter…But More Than That To Me!

Monday, December 21st, 2009

My morn started at 3:45 with trying to soothe my 2 YO niece in the bedroom down the hall. My family and I celebrated Christmas a few days early at my parents’ house, ending in a sleepover. Guess who was the lucky one to sleep on the couch? You got it. It was actually comfy, but with little ones in the house, you never know when you’ll be wakened, or for what reason. I know this is nothing to you parents reading this; but in my fabulous singleness and mother of none-ness, it still bucks my system. Soooo, of course the soothing, patting and “here’s your baby doll” -ing I tried didn’t work. She just needed Mommy.

We also celebrated my 27th birthday yesterday. I drove more than 2 hours to meet the family at church, then lunch, presents and more presents, texts and phonecalls (I didn’t answer one!) birthday cake (chocolate with Bavarian Cream thanks to my mom’s choosing but a sweet surprise) pictures, a trampouline, game of Spades, explaining Twitter to my dad and more birthday wishes. And I’m older. And I didn’t even see a new wrinkle :) . Stay tuned for a few pictures.’Twas a great day.

This morning I’m enjoying the glow of this Christmas tree’s lights even moreso since I didn’t put one up at my house. I don’t mind the 2 days in a row of waking up before usual because it’s for something and someones special. I ate too many sweets last night and don’t feel (too) guilty because you only get one birthday a year. I enjoyed reading all the messages I was sent via Facebook. Some of  my favorites included

-”put the camera down for the day and relax…”

-”eat all the cake and think of me”

-”I sent a singing telegram but don’t know where you live…”

-I was called sweet cheeks, sweetie, pretty girl and sweet pea among others I won’t list. My fav? Fabulous diva :)

Happy first day of winter! First day of Capricorn for all the horoscope believers. Happy last Monday to go to work in 2009 for many people. Happy birthday hangover to me (you can see I’m still celebrating with this entire blog entry devoted to me) But now I’m off to enjoy Happy Break In My New GPS System Day as I wind my way back to my everyday world for just a bit before the magic that is December 25 is here. Maybe I won’t have to sleep on the couch again.

So You Think Fat Is Ugly

Friday, November 13th, 2009

The pics were sent to me as part of a mass email from a friend. I don’t know where they were taken. I don’t know the models. The caption of the email said “After seeing these, I think I’ll keep my fat a** thank you very much.”

Yes, let's put some makeup on.

Yes, let's put on some makeup.

A few days ago on morning television (only local stations, not cable) I flipped through for just a few minutes.

I kid you not. Within a 10 minute time frame I saw the following. NBC had the former Ralph Lauren model sharing her story on The Today Show about the magazine cover which caused a ruckus because her body was distorted. You can read the news story from NYDailyNews here. I flip to ABC. With my new digital box (these kids and their technology these days I tell ya) I receive more than one Channel 7 (make sense?) Channel 7-1 Valerie Bertinelli was on Good Morning America promoting her weight loss and her new book “Finding It–and Satisfying My Hunger for Life Without Opening the Fridge”. Channel 7-2 showed off the “Slim in 6″ DVD set infomercial. And on CBS, I saw their series titled “Down 2 Size” which features a different person and his/her weight issues each week. All of those, within 10 minutes, on 80% of my channels. True, it was just a happenstance, but still.

Lastly, a Twitter update caught my eye so I asked more about it. Sydney’s Cause is a newborn organization who hopes to raise awareness about eating disorders, educate the community and someday financially help the families of those affected. I am not endorsing this cause by posting this blog as I have yet to see any proof it’s producing any positive changes. (So new that I don’t know think they have a website or anything official yet. I’d be glad to get you in contact with the person I heard from.) But I thought it was a timely and worthy addition to the subject at hand. Plus, I hope it will be successful and strong someday and by helping spread the word in my blog, I can be part of that strength. Because we can all use a little support. Because we all have a weakness. No matter who we are.
