O.P.I Hearts Ogre

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

Because cross-promotion is inevitable when it comes to Hollywood and new things and fashion and celebrities and all that glitter…why was I surprised when I learned the new Shrek movie has found it’s way to nail polish? What? That’s right. O.P.I. has debuted a new collection especially for the summer movie “Shrek Forever After”. With a bold blue called “Ogre-The-Top-Blue” and a slimy, snotty shade of “Who the Shrek Are You?” it’s definitely, mmmm unusual. O.P.I is the brand so well-known for the creative names they give all shades of their popular polish. (It may be pricier than some, but it’s long-lasting and strong) Though so many trends and fads stick around for a while in the spotlight, I bet these don’t fly off the shelves, much less stay around as classics. They’ll be just popular enough to catch the attention of teens and make enough money to make it worth it for O.P.I We’re used to movie toys in our Happy Meals (what? They DO still put toys in them, right?) and of course commercials during favorite TV shows…but nail polish? And guess what? They did this with Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland” this spring! “Off With Her Red” anybody?! I guess it can’t hurt…no pun intended.

Purrrrrrty Polish perhaps?

Now, question: What shade of polish would you create and what would you name it? With their best-selling “I’m Not Really A Waitress” and “Cajun Shrimp” I’m guessing the guys and gals over at O.P.I. could surely use a little  creative juice to refuel every now and then. Because, you know, that new movie’s coming out this fall and they’re going to need catchy names…

Reliving Dreams for The Dreamland

Howard County. The Drive-In. I was a youngster; no older than 12 years old. My hometown had a real drive-in movie theater. One of the last standing in the state of Arkansas. (Alas, it’s not anymore) But I remember when the weather would get warmer, my mom would take my brother, sister and me to the movie. Not every week. Just a few times. It was so special. My best friend’s parents were friends with the owners so we would sometimes entertain ourselves in the concession stand. I guess that happened when the movie wasn’t one I cared about seeing. I can smell that popcorn. I can see the “behind the counter” view of all that candy. Those people standing in line for Twizzlers and Dr. Pepper.  It was “old skool” …where you park beside posts, roll down your windows and use the headphones to listen to the movie. The soundtrack comes from your car radio if you’re lucky enough to get clear reception on the required station with no static. On static-y nights we just had to use a little more patience and imagination to enjoy what we were watching. I remember my dad told me when HE was young they’d sneak in several friends by hiding them in the trunk of a car. I’m sure he’s prayed for forgiveness since those rowdy high school days.

"The Outlaw" shows June 26

So I smiled when I heard about this event happening in Little Rock. An old ballroom, Dreamland Ballroom, is trying to gain support for a renovation and thus hosting a drive-in theater. Details can be seen here and though I don’t recognize all those titles, I hope to attend at least one night. I know it won’t be the same, or near as good as my childhood memories. But I’ll still enjoy it because you never outgrow sitting under the stars, watching a movie, and getting mosquito bites.

Free Food, Free Movies and Super Bowl Spot

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

A few bits you may find helpful. Or interesting. Or neither.

-Denny’s is offering a free Grand Slam breakfast to visitors Tuesday, February 9. 6:00 a.m. til 2:00 p.m.

-Sync has canceled the Singles Mingles contest previously announced. Stay tuned for it to show up later in the year, perhaps. But by all means, don’t turn down hot dates in the meantime.

-Yippeeeee! Movies in the Park is once again returning this summer to bring fabulous free, family-friendly entertainment for movie-lovers, couples, friends, cheapskates and the like. February 10 we can gather to hear the lineup of this summer’s chosen flicks. If you’ve never enjoyed Movies in the Park in Little Rock, I feel sorry for you. You must take advantage. Go this year and tell ‘em I sent ya!

-Speaking of movies…April 3, Morgan Freeman is coming to Little Rock to accept an award for Outstanding Contributions for Southern Culture from the Oxford American. Anddddd, as I previously reported via this video, a locally produced movie titled “Step Away From the Stone” has been cast and the shooting begins as soon as “early February” (which is… any day now) Stay tuned for more info ;)

-Finally, with the hype of the Super Bowl commercials I bring you this nugget: One of the spots stirring up lots of controversy is the Focus on Family spot (This organization is Pro-Life). One of the producers is a fellow Harding University alum. We were not students at the same time and I don’t know him. But I always love to hear about what other alumni are doing with their time and talents. Here is a recent interview on FOX news if you want a bit of background before you see it on Sunday night as you stuff your hand into the bag of Doritos.
