Support

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

As a volunteer at the Arkansas Children’s Hospital, there are a lot of things to see and hear. Some things must remain confidential, but there are some things which are safe to share and too cute to keep to oneself.

Recently I was visiting with a young boy. He was cheerful and spoke with a strong southern accent. We played with an animal puzzle and he told me about his dog.

“It’s a white dawg. He likes to eat bones. Them white bones but we had to go to Walmart to get some more.” (last word had 2 syllables)

Me “Do you like bones?”

Boy: Scrunches nose. “No.”

Me: “Do you eat chicken?”

Boy: “I like chicken. I like them little macaronis and cheeeeese!”

He told me how he had his tonsils taken out and …”it didn’t even hurt. I drank grape juice. It was goooood. They put scissors in there and just took em out while I was asleep! It didn’t hurt.”

In the shadow of more serious reasons he was there, the tonsillectomy seemed minimal.

Later I walked past a room where an older boy was playing a toy guitar. I popped my head in and did the “Rockstar- stick your tongue out- hold your hand up” pose. He smiled and just kept jammin’.

In other news on the hospital campus, they’ve been undergoing some renovations and improvements. This beam was prominently displayed in front of the main entrance for passers-by, staff, volunteers, and patients to sign before it’s used in the South Wing. A little way to let the community be a part of the ACH family and show some support.

A signature with a marker, a puzzle with a child. The little things are what the big things are made of.

It’s All His Anyway

Monday, May 10th, 2010

Since Nashville was underwater last week, I was looking online  for ways to help/donate. Research took me through different organizations, blogs and news stations’ websites and I was trying to choose the best. Then I was hit with a thought: Money is money is money. A donation in a basket while sitting on the church pew Sunday morning is the same money as dropping a check in the mail to some long distance address (*assuming you do your research and it’s a trustworthy company–leaving that part up to you) $10 added to a phonebill via texting a special number is equal to $10 you put in the office collection or spend on cookies at a bake sale benefit. I skimmed over multiple options of where one could donate ranging from nationally known organizations to small community outreaches. I see facebook groups and I hear about churches’ special contributions.

It’s all God’s. All these blessings he’s given to us to share with others…it’s all God’s. It’s the epitome of “What goes around comes around.”  He blesses me, shares with me and calls on me to share it with others around me. I caught myself saying “Oh I don’t want to donate there, I’ll give it to this one over here…” I can’t help but laugh a bit. (We all do it, though.) Why? If it’s good work here, it’s good work 5 miles down the road. Giving a little girl a new shirt is just as good as helping an old man purchase gas.

I choose not to share specific links to any chosen donation sites because I want you to do your own work. (And I think you’ll be happy to see how many there are to choose from!)

Luke 12:48 “For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more.”

If that’s true (which I firmly believe it is) then I have a lot to be giving to somebody. Which outlet I choose is the task. Just as long as I choose one (or some) That’s what matters. Because it’s all His anyway.

So, I Went to See the Ponies

And it was amazing. I had never been to Oaklawn Racetrack in all my ___ years of life, much less the past 5 years lived in Little Rock. I had heard so much about it. How much fun one could have. How many people are there. The infield is open. People are dressed like movie stars —and some movie stars actually attend. (Was informed Julia Roberts has a box each season. I wonder how many times she’s really been there.) And so, luck would have it the day I finally got to it was the day of the Arkansas Derby = The biggest (and final) race at Oaklawn each season.

I picked up my sister Leah, brother-in-law Matt and two of their friends from the house they had rented for the weekend. We piled into my Xterra (I loved having passengers! Should do that more often!) We scored a great parking spot and got to the infield in time for the 5th race. This is a prime place for people watching. I saw many familiar faces (They will remain anonymous: I don’t want to be the source for their demise if they may have not wanted everyone to know they were there (just being honest!))

Hayden, Steve and Me talking about the longshot. OK...them talking, me pretending to understand.

I soaked up the little things…the fact that I was not there to cover the event (no offense to my job, it’s just very rare for me to get to really enjoy an event and not worry about taking pictures of strangers :) )I enjoyed the creative and quirky names of these fabulous athletes thousands of fans gather to watch and cheer on every single week. I revelled in yelling for my chosen horse; jumping up and down like a child. I soaked up the sunshine on my arms while chatting with my sister about boys and commentating other girls’ outfits. I ran into a former coworker who loves his new job at Oaklawn and was sporting this very posh Derby Day tie.

The label on the exclusive Derby necktie

I had another engagement calling me back to Little Rock so I tried to get the most out of the short time I was there. I didn’t leave without getting this “tourist shot” in front of the starting gates with Matt and Leah. (of course the word “Oaklawn” got cut out of the shot—hey, not everybody can be a professional photographer)

Yeah, we meant to color coordinate.

Oh well. I don’t need the word painted on a gate to remember this place. An afternoon with 2 people I love, beautiful horses thundering on the track and experiencing something for the first time? Oaklawn, I can’t quit you. I will be back. I will be back next year to hear more hooves, taste the Reuben, gawk at the gambling and make more memories. You think I’m a longshot? Just wait.

“Live Like We’re Dying”

Monday, April 12th, 2010

Kris’s visit to Little Rock last week to raise awareness for Bridge 2 Rwanda included a mini concert accompanied by Cale Mills…and he jokes with the crowd about this particular song. The “Barefoot Bash” was casual and unique with most party-goers taking off their shoes and rockin’ out with the American Idol for a good cause.

and I played the “Ridiculously Over-Excited Fan” card to get a quick snap with Kris. Shamelessly sharing it below. Thanks for taking a second for me, Kris!

Just doing my thing…spreading the word. Following is email from casting director.

2 Top designers will be traveling the US looking for Amazing WOMAN to makeover from Head to Toe! We will select only a few from each state and will be designing a “one of a kind” outfit for EACH event.

Why look through your closet to wear the same dress you wore just 2 months ago when you can have something made especially for you, and especially for the event. Some would say this type of outfit would be very expensive but in actuality it is PRICELESS!

These two designers will spend the day with you, learning your STYLE, speaking with your LOVED ONES and friends, THEN they will create something especially for you.

Free Food, Free Movies and Super Bowl Spot

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

A few bits you may find helpful. Or interesting. Or neither.

-Denny’s is offering a free Grand Slam breakfast to visitors Tuesday, February 9. 6:00 a.m. til 2:00 p.m.

-Sync has canceled the Singles Mingles contest previously announced. Stay tuned for it to show up later in the year, perhaps. But by all means, don’t turn down hot dates in the meantime.

-Yippeeeee! Movies in the Park is once again returning this summer to bring fabulous free, family-friendly entertainment for movie-lovers, couples, friends, cheapskates and the like. February 10 we can gather to hear the lineup of this summer’s chosen flicks. If you’ve never enjoyed Movies in the Park in Little Rock, I feel sorry for you. You must take advantage. Go this year and tell ‘em I sent ya!

-Speaking of movies…April 3, Morgan Freeman is coming to Little Rock to accept an award for Outstanding Contributions for Southern Culture from the Oxford American. Anddddd, as I previously reported via this video, a locally produced movie titled “Step Away From the Stone” has been cast and the shooting begins as soon as “early February” (which is… any day now) Stay tuned for more info ;)

-Finally, with the hype of the Super Bowl commercials I bring you this nugget: One of the spots stirring up lots of controversy is the Focus on Family spot (This organization is Pro-Life). One of the producers is a fellow Harding University alum. We were not students at the same time and I don’t know him. But I always love to hear about what other alumni are doing with their time and talents. Here is a recent interview on FOX news if you want a bit of background before you see it on Sunday night as you stuff your hand into the bag of Doritos.

But What’s Her Name?

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

She’s here!

Valerie and I had a smooth, speedy trip to Texarkana (see previous post) With a few stops along the way…oil change, makeup, gas, state trooper…the usual.

I’ve got to brag. We get to the hospital at 3:15 and find our parents in the waiting room. Mama shows us to Carmen’s room. Going to pop in to say “hi and good luck.” I walk up and hear…the baby crying! “She’s here! She’s here! Go call them! (meaning the family, since Mama had phone in hand) I hear her crying!”

*Please excuse the eyeliner samples on my wrist :)

Unfortunately the volume of my voice was enough to alert the nurse who promptly poked her head out the door to let us know we “need to leave. It will be a few minutes”. But hey, those bragging rights can’t be taken away from me!

So we’re in the waiting room a few minutes later and more family shows up and Trey comes in to announce. Baby is 7 lb. 12 oz. and  22″ long with very long feet. What’s her name? No answer. Everyone is excited and we begin to

Tweet, text, Facebook this news!

Tweet, text, Facebook, etc. What’s her name? No answer.

Quick and easy (easy for us to say–WE aren’t the ones having the baby!) It’s a big fun party with kids running around with balloons and chocolate covered pretzels. Well, not for everyone. Carmen was snacking on a club sandwich when we go in and see her. I think the nurses were mixed up  because 10 minutes after she ate her sandwich they brought another entree! Please find the one carrot stick a significant part of a healthy meal :)

"You had a baby! Now have some gravy!"

The cousins are sooo eager to see her.

Lined up to meet the little one.

‘Twas a wonderful reunion with the family, a fun road trip on a sunny day with one of my best friends who shares nieces with me. I gave Trey some Samoas (his favorite Girl Scout Cookie) Maybe he’ll share with Carmen after she finishes her carrot stick and mystery meat. But he’d better save some for these little girls because they’re going to need something to make it through the next few days. They just don’t know it yet.

People on my Mind

Friday, January 15th, 2010

I’ve got others on my mind. Before you dismiss this post thinking it’s a sappy, lovey, all-we-need-is-love ramble, hear me out?

Checking my mailbox this morn I smiled as soon as I saw it: a “Reader’s Digest”.  I like this little mag. But that’s not why I smiled. The smile was for my grandmother. Maw gave me a subscription to this mag a few years ago. When it ran out, she asked me if I liked it or wanted to get a different magazine. Then I began receiving “Better Homes and Gardens”. Funny, because I have neither a “house”- home nor a garden but I quickly grew to adore the monthly treat. So I received that for two years. My grandmother is getting “up there” in age. And what she’s gaining in years, she’s losing in sanity. I don’t mean that disrespectfully. It’s just the truth. Just this week she got some appointments and places mixed up on her “trip to town” (what us country people call it) It broke my heart to hear. But she’s still my grandmother and she’s still loving every one of us just the same. So if she forgot and signed me up for the wrong subscription, it’s ok. I’ll enjoy it more because it’s from her…even if she doesn’t remember it.

Those Haitians. We all know the devastation they are facing right now. I speak only for myself: I think about, donate to, pray for and blog about them…but I don’t REALLY try to imagine what it’s like to be one of them. And I think that a bit selfish of me. Do you?

Lady GaGa. She had to cancel a concert his week in Indiana due to exhaustion. Poor girl. I could imagine it IS exhausting trying to find a wardrobe like hers every day. 265

My sister-in-law and brother. She is due to have Baby #3 on January 30. The last report says baby’s not going to wait that long! A healthy labor and delivery for SIL and a healthy, happy life for my 5th niece are on my mind!

A neighbor. In the parking lot of my apartment this morn an Indian neighbor asked if I could purchase some tickets for her. She needed to get somewhere (home? I didn’t understand exactly what she asked.) She’d walked to the library which wasn’t opened yet. She had problems on another computer somewhere else, etc. I didn’t understand her and not sure I could have or even should have helped her right then. But she’s on my mind because: wow. La-di-dahhh I live my  life running around going to work, going to play, going to church, eating, going shopping, working out, socializing, getting in my car when I want… She was asking desperately for me to help her get somewhere. Maybe to see her family in another country? Maybe there’s a problem I can’t imagine? Maybe I’m over analyzing, but it still makes me think of her. And the other millions just like her.

Conan O’Brien. No matter what happens, where he goes, which network gives him a desk and a paycheck, he’ll keep entertaining and life will go on. But he’s definitely on my mind since I love his humor and crazy red hair. No go CoCo!

So You Think Fat Is Ugly

Friday, November 13th, 2009

The pics were sent to me as part of a mass email from a friend. I don’t know where they were taken. I don’t know the models. The caption of the email said “After seeing these, I think I’ll keep my fat a** thank you very much.”

Yes, let's put some makeup on.

Yes, let's put on some makeup.

A few days ago on morning television (only local stations, not cable) I flipped through for just a few minutes.

I kid you not. Within a 10 minute time frame I saw the following. NBC had the former Ralph Lauren model sharing her story on The Today Show about the magazine cover which caused a ruckus because her body was distorted. You can read the news story from NYDailyNews here. I flip to ABC. With my new digital box (these kids and their technology these days I tell ya) I receive more than one Channel 7 (make sense?) Channel 7-1 Valerie Bertinelli was on Good Morning America promoting her weight loss and her new book “Finding It–and Satisfying My Hunger for Life Without Opening the Fridge”. Channel 7-2 showed off the “Slim in 6″ DVD set infomercial. And on CBS, I saw their series titled “Down 2 Size” which features a different person and his/her weight issues each week. All of those, within 10 minutes, on 80% of my channels. True, it was just a happenstance, but still.

Lastly, a Twitter update caught my eye so I asked more about it. Sydney’s Cause is a newborn organization who hopes to raise awareness about eating disorders, educate the community and someday financially help the families of those affected. I am not endorsing this cause by posting this blog as I have yet to see any proof it’s producing any positive changes. (So new that I don’t know think they have a website or anything official yet. I’d be glad to get you in contact with the person I heard from.) But I thought it was a timely and worthy addition to the subject at hand. Plus, I hope it will be successful and strong someday and by helping spread the word in my blog, I can be part of that strength. Because we can all use a little support. Because we all have a weakness. No matter who we are.

I share no personal opinion, expertise, or criticism on the things I have written about. But they were on my radar and on my mind.

Cleaning and Cookies Against Cancer? Sign me up.

Friday, November 6th, 2009

October was Breast Cancer Awareness Month, though any time to shed light on it is timely in my book. Cleaning for a Reason provides free housecleaning services for women undergoing chemo!

A goodie from my sister I wanted to pass along is from LifetimeTV. Their petition is pushing for patients’ rights and speaking up about women who are forced to leave hospitals just hours after having invasive surgeries. I signed it. Will you?

Finally, in my mailbox coupons (which I usually flip through and find nothing I want to purchase anyway) I found GLAD is hosting a bake sale to fight pediatric cancer. You host a Cookies for Kids’ Cancer bake sale in November or December and GLAD will match the money raised. www.GladtoGive.com to learn more. Sounds like a sweet deal to me.
