Free Food, Free Movies and Super Bowl Spot

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

A few bits you may find helpful. Or interesting. Or neither.

-Denny’s is offering a free Grand Slam breakfast to visitors Tuesday, February 9. 6:00 a.m. til 2:00 p.m.

-Sync has canceled the Singles Mingles contest previously announced. Stay tuned for it to show up later in the year, perhaps. But by all means, don’t turn down hot dates in the meantime.

-Yippeeeee! Movies in the Park is once again returning this summer to bring fabulous free, family-friendly entertainment for movie-lovers, couples, friends, cheapskates and the like. February 10 we can gather to hear the lineup of this summer’s chosen flicks. If you’ve never enjoyed Movies in the Park in Little Rock, I feel sorry for you. You must take advantage. Go this year and tell ‘em I sent ya!

-Speaking of movies…April 3, Morgan Freeman is coming to Little Rock to accept an award for Outstanding Contributions for Southern Culture from the Oxford American. Anddddd, as I previously reported via this video, a locally produced movie titled “Step Away From the Stone” has been cast and the shooting begins as soon as “early February” (which is… any day now) Stay tuned for more info ;)

-Finally, with the hype of the Super Bowl commercials I bring you this nugget: One of the spots stirring up lots of controversy is the Focus on Family spot (This organization is Pro-Life). One of the producers is a fellow Harding University alum. We were not students at the same time and I don’t know him. But I always love to hear about what other alumni are doing with their time and talents. Here is a recent interview on FOX news if you want a bit of background before you see it on Sunday night as you stuff your hand into the bag of Doritos.

But What’s Her Name?

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

She’s here!

Valerie and I had a smooth, speedy trip to Texarkana (see previous post) With a few stops along the way…oil change, makeup, gas, state trooper…the usual.

I’ve got to brag. We get to the hospital at 3:15 and find our parents in the waiting room. Mama shows us to Carmen’s room. Going to pop in to say “hi and good luck.” I walk up and hear…the baby crying! “She’s here! She’s here! Go call them! (meaning the family, since Mama had phone in hand) I hear her crying!”

*Please excuse the eyeliner samples on my wrist :)

Unfortunately the volume of my voice was enough to alert the nurse who promptly poked her head out the door to let us know we “need to leave. It will be a few minutes”. But hey, those bragging rights can’t be taken away from me!

So we’re in the waiting room a few minutes later and more family shows up and Trey comes in to announce. Baby is 7 lb. 12 oz. and  22″ long with very long feet. What’s her name? No answer. Everyone is excited and we begin to

Tweet, text, Facebook this news!

Tweet, text, Facebook, etc. What’s her name? No answer.

Quick and easy (easy for us to say–WE aren’t the ones having the baby!) It’s a big fun party with kids running around with balloons and chocolate covered pretzels. Well, not for everyone. Carmen was snacking on a club sandwich when we go in and see her. I think the nurses were mixed up  because 10 minutes after she ate her sandwich they brought another entree! Please find the one carrot stick a significant part of a healthy meal :)

"You had a baby! Now have some gravy!"

The cousins are sooo eager to see her.

Lined up to meet the little one.

‘Twas a wonderful reunion with the family, a fun road trip on a sunny day with one of my best friends who shares nieces with me. I gave Trey some Samoas (his favorite Girl Scout Cookie) Maybe he’ll share with Carmen after she finishes her carrot stick and mystery meat. But he’d better save some for these little girls because they’re going to need something to make it through the next few days. They just don’t know it yet.

People on my Mind

Friday, January 15th, 2010

I’ve got others on my mind. Before you dismiss this post thinking it’s a sappy, lovey, all-we-need-is-love ramble, hear me out?

Checking my mailbox this morn I smiled as soon as I saw it: a “Reader’s Digest”.  I like this little mag. But that’s not why I smiled. The smile was for my grandmother. Maw gave me a subscription to this mag a few years ago. When it ran out, she asked me if I liked it or wanted to get a different magazine. Then I began receiving “Better Homes and Gardens”. Funny, because I have neither a “house”- home nor a garden but I quickly grew to adore the monthly treat. So I received that for two years. My grandmother is getting “up there” in age. And what she’s gaining in years, she’s losing in sanity. I don’t mean that disrespectfully. It’s just the truth. Just this week she got some appointments and places mixed up on her “trip to town” (what us country people call it) It broke my heart to hear. But she’s still my grandmother and she’s still loving every one of us just the same. So if she forgot and signed me up for the wrong subscription, it’s ok. I’ll enjoy it more because it’s from her…even if she doesn’t remember it.

Those Haitians. We all know the devastation they are facing right now. I speak only for myself: I think about, donate to, pray for and blog about them…but I don’t REALLY try to imagine what it’s like to be one of them. And I think that a bit selfish of me. Do you?

Lady GaGa. She had to cancel a concert his week in Indiana due to exhaustion. Poor girl. I could imagine it IS exhausting trying to find a wardrobe like hers every day. 265

My sister-in-law and brother. She is due to have Baby #3 on January 30. The last report says baby’s not going to wait that long! A healthy labor and delivery for SIL and a healthy, happy life for my 5th niece are on my mind!

A neighbor. In the parking lot of my apartment this morn an Indian neighbor asked if I could purchase some tickets for her. She needed to get somewhere (home? I didn’t understand exactly what she asked.) She’d walked to the library which wasn’t opened yet. She had problems on another computer somewhere else, etc. I didn’t understand her and not sure I could have or even should have helped her right then. But she’s on my mind because: wow. La-di-dahhh I live my  life running around going to work, going to play, going to church, eating, going shopping, working out, socializing, getting in my car when I want… She was asking desperately for me to help her get somewhere. Maybe to see her family in another country? Maybe there’s a problem I can’t imagine? Maybe I’m over analyzing, but it still makes me think of her. And the other millions just like her.

Conan O’Brien. No matter what happens, where he goes, which network gives him a desk and a paycheck, he’ll keep entertaining and life will go on. But he’s definitely on my mind since I love his humor and crazy red hair. No go CoCo!

So You Think Fat Is Ugly

Friday, November 13th, 2009

The pics were sent to me as part of a mass email from a friend. I don’t know where they were taken. I don’t know the models. The caption of the email said “After seeing these, I think I’ll keep my fat a** thank you very much.”

Yes, let's put some makeup on.

Yes, let's put on some makeup.

A few days ago on morning television (only local stations, not cable) I flipped through for just a few minutes.

I kid you not. Within a 10 minute time frame I saw the following. NBC had the former Ralph Lauren model sharing her story on The Today Show about the magazine cover which caused a ruckus because her body was distorted. You can read the news story from NYDailyNews here. I flip to ABC. With my new digital box (these kids and their technology these days I tell ya) I receive more than one Channel 7 (make sense?) Channel 7-1 Valerie Bertinelli was on Good Morning America promoting her weight loss and her new book “Finding It–and Satisfying My Hunger for Life Without Opening the Fridge”. Channel 7-2 showed off the “Slim in 6″ DVD set infomercial. And on CBS, I saw their series titled “Down 2 Size” which features a different person and his/her weight issues each week. All of those, within 10 minutes, on 80% of my channels. True, it was just a happenstance, but still.

Lastly, a Twitter update caught my eye so I asked more about it. Sydney’s Cause is a newborn organization who hopes to raise awareness about eating disorders, educate the community and someday financially help the families of those affected. I am not endorsing this cause by posting this blog as I have yet to see any proof it’s producing any positive changes. (So new that I don’t know think they have a website or anything official yet. I’d be glad to get you in contact with the person I heard from.) But I thought it was a timely and worthy addition to the subject at hand. Plus, I hope it will be successful and strong someday and by helping spread the word in my blog, I can be part of that strength. Because we can all use a little support. Because we all have a weakness. No matter who we are.

I share no personal opinion, expertise, or criticism on the things I have written about. But they were on my radar and on my mind.

Cleaning and Cookies Against Cancer? Sign me up.

Friday, November 6th, 2009

October was Breast Cancer Awareness Month, though any time to shed light on it is timely in my book. Cleaning for a Reason provides free housecleaning services for women undergoing chemo!

A goodie from my sister I wanted to pass along is from LifetimeTV. Their petition is pushing for patients’ rights and speaking up about women who are forced to leave hospitals just hours after having invasive surgeries. I signed it. Will you?

Finally, in my mailbox coupons (which I usually flip through and find nothing I want to purchase anyway) I found GLAD is hosting a bake sale to fight pediatric cancer. You host a Cookies for Kids’ Cancer bake sale in November or December and GLAD will match the money raised. www.GladtoGive.com to learn more. Sounds like a sweet deal to me.

Sometimes we realize we made a mistake…

Monday, October 19th, 2009

…and we take the steps to make it right. It’s what a responsible citizen does. What a mature adult does. What a sincere leader does. It’s what the heads at Harding University did when it came to allowing (or not allowing) lottery tickets on campus. In the past week our state has seen the launch of the Arkansas lottery in the form of scratch-off tickets, sold at gas stations and other venues. The first few days Harding allowed the tickets on campus. Not promoting them or selling them. Just allowing. For people who are familiar with Harding’s rules and regulations this was a shocker. And yes, it made the news. More than once. But now campus officials have taken it back: Nevermind. Rewind. They won’t allow it…after all, it is a form of gambling and the student handbook strictly and clearly prohibits gambling. With its Church of Christ affiliation, that’s not a shocker. Enough of the recap–you can find the story if you want more details. This is the Today’sTHV link , just one of the local stations’ take on it. I just want to share my thoughts about the situation. Briefly.

I’m a proud Harding University alumna. I knew the rules when, as a Senior in high school, I submitted my application to attend. I was aware of the guidelines and ready to live by most of them.  ;)   Church of Christ-ers (I use that term loosely and casually) are known for believing gambling is wrong. Any form, any reason. Going to Vegas? You might get a raised eyebrow. Want to support the raffle at that special event? Don’t tell the preacher. Horse races? You better only be going for the corned-beef sandwich. Actually, probably best not to go there at all. Because, you see, those are all associated with gambling and it’s wrong in so many people’s eyes. I Thess 5:22 “abstain from all appearance of evil.” I was raised that way. And to get right down to it, I don’t think I even understood gambling until my early twenties. I just knew that phrase in my head, kinda like how a child memorizes the Pledge of Allegiance, but do they really understand the words they’re saying? Their meaning? On one side, the school could take advantage of the scholarships. With this institution’s tuition ranking as one of the highest in the state, that could be a big help for hundreds of students. On the other side, allowing a small piece of paper on campus that gives one a chance to “get lucky” and win something bigger than the investment shows a waiver in the strong foundation Harding has prided itself of over the past decades.

Based on a few scriptures, you can see where the argument. A few to highlight: (look these up b/c I’m not quoting, only listing them.)  Prov. 28:19-22, I Timothy 6:6-11, 2 Thess 3:7,10

As the aforementioned alumna, I have received a little ragging from people who know I attended Harding. In the first week (when they were allowed) I was very surprised and honestly, I was curious how it fell through the cracks. Now that President Burks, along with his faithful staff and devout decisionmakers, has decided to ban the tickets and make a public announcement saying so, I am more proud of my alma mater than I already was. It’s not anything against the lottery, or the scholarships, or Arkansas having scratch-off games available as we pay for gas or buy our soft drink at the quick stop. It’s the fact that the higher-ups at Harding University realized they had taken a mis-step, stepped back, and turned back to the path they had chosen to follow from the beginning.

Let’s help Arkansas win!

Monday, October 5th, 2009

Perhaps you’re aware of the online contest so many facebookers have posted. Maybe you’re not. I’ll take advantage of my public blog to help promote: The Children’s Miracle Network is giving three lucky hospitals the “Ultimate Gameroom” experience. Arkansas Children’s Hospital is in the running. Every vote helps. I’ve watched us go from 7th place, up to 1st…but we mustn’t slack off.

Here’s the link

And you can vote 10 times a day. The contest runs til mid October. So go, get your game on!

The crowd before the American Idol Tour

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

Among the masses, I was there with my camera.

Come on, now, it’s …natural?

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

This week during my visit to 103.7 The Buzz, Justin shared a story about tennis star Michelle Larcher de Brito. Not her cool new racquet or the charity she’s passionate about. No, she’s gaining attention for her habit of grunting during her tennis game. Grunts so loud they can be heard 3 courts away. Now officials are calling “foul.” This article tells about the whole situation.

Maybe she can’t stop it? If it just comes out naturally because of the force behind her swing? So I took up for her on air when it was my turn to talk. I know that tennis (just like any sport on the professional level) has rules and etiquette. Her grunting does sound quite offensive–some would say almost sexual.  And it has been known to be distracting and unnecessary. As a (verrrry part time) tennis player I can justify the occasional grunt. But I an also imagine being on the other side of the net and wanting to hit my opponent with more than just the little ball.

So…what do you think? You think it calls for a rule? A law?

Annnnd if you were the grunter, how would you react to this?
